Capoten or Captopril is the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme – ACE
Inhibitor drug which blocks the enzyme system, causing artery walls
to relax and lower the blood pressure in the blood vessels. This
category of medication is usually recommended or prescribed for the
patients having high blood pressure who wish to be able to exercise
rather normally. Capoten treatment does not cause increase in blood
pressure if abruptly given up and exhibits less impact on the liver
as compared to the other medications and does not poise any problem
in asthma, diabetes or high cholesterol. Capoten may be prescribed
as the combination drug with digitalis and diuretic
Hydrochloro-thiazide which is another known treatment for decreasing
the blood pressure.
The drug is widely prescribed for treating advanced or congestive
heart failure, high blood pressure of any level; minimize the risk
of death following congestive heart failure or heart attack. It may
also be used for treating the diabetics with kidney problems.
Capoten works by preventing the chemical known as angiotensin-I in
the blood from converting into rather probable form that increase
salt and water retention in the body. Capoten is believed to
increase the blood flow through out the blood vessels in the body.
Capoten is also used for improving survival in certain patients who
have suffered from the heart attacks and for treating the kidney
ailments in diabetic patients.
Capoten is also currently prescribed by some doctors for angina
pectoris – crushing chest pains, Raynaud’s phenomenon which is a
disorder of the blood vessels that causes the fingers turn white
when exposed to extreme cold and rheumatoid arthritis.
